West Tennessee Earthquake Awareness Week February 11-15, 2008
West Tennessee Earthquake Awareness Week 2008 is a mutual effort between the Center for Earthquake Research and Information (CERI) and several state, federal, and non-governmental agencies with support from Mid-South Association of Contingency Planners, West TN Seismic Safety Commission, Partners in Disaster Preparedeness and major funding from our corporate partner in the effort, State Farm Insurance. The goal of these activities was to increase awareness of the earthquake hazard and to promote planning among public, professional, and business communities to that will result in more disaster resistant communities in West Tennessee. Activities included an earthquake preparedness poster contest for grades 4-6 across west Tennessee; a series of TV Public Service Announcements; Earthquake Town Meetings in several high-risk urban areas in west Tennessee; and professional workshops to promote disaster preparedness among key public and private sector interests.

Monday, February 11
7:30 AM – 1:00 PM Community Resilience and Earthquake Preparedness Summit FedEx Institute of Technology at The University of Memphis 365 Innovation Drive Memphis, TN 38152-3115 Partners: CERI, Community and Regional Resilience Initiative (Oak Ridge) and the West Tennessee Seismic Safety Commission.
The WTSSC received the Governor's Proclamation for Earthquake Awareness Week 2008. We would like to congratualte all recipients.
1:30 PM - 4:30 PM Business Meeting of the West Tennessee Seismic Safety Commission Fogelman Business School, The University of Memphis This was a public meeting.
Tuesday, February 12
6:00 PM – 8:00 PM Earthquake Town Hall Meeting, Covington, Tennessee Covington/Tipton County Chamber of Commerce Building Partners: CERI, Covington/Tipton Government, Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, and the Central US Earthquake Consortium Purpose: Was to provide an expert panel to discuss local disaster preparedness strategies followed by a public question and answer period. Media announcement prepared by Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA). We would like to thank everyone for coming and thank the Chamber of Commerce for the use of their facilities.
Wednesday, February 13
12:00 PM – 2:30 PM Earthquake Town Hall Meeting, Ripley, Tennessee Tennessee Technology Center Partners: CERI, Ripley/Lauderdale Government, Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, and the Central US Earthquake Consortium Purpose: Was to provide an expert panel to discuss local disaster preparedness strategies. This was followed by a public question and answer period. Media announcement prepared by Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA). We would like to thank everyone for coming and thank Tennessee Technology Center for the meeting room.
Thursday, February 14
7:30 AM – 1:00 PM A New Madrid Seismic Zone Workshop for Risk Managers and Insurers was held at The FedEx Institute of Technology Partners: State Farm Insurance, Risk and Insurance Management Society, Inc., Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters Society, and the Insurers of Memphis Purpose: A professional development workshop for insurers and risk managers. 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM Open House at CERI 3892 Central Avenue, Memphis, TN Partners: CERI, Mid-South Association of Contingency Planners, Memphis Light Gas and Water, Memphis Shelby County Emergency Management Agency, and the American Red Cross Purpose: The purpose of the Open House at CERI was to inform the public on our research and public outreach activities. The Center provided exhibits about past earthquakes, present day earthquakes, future earthquakes, earthquake music, the sonic boom produced by the space shuttle, the Fault Observatory for the Central US, the Mississippi River seismic experiment, recent tsunamis, and many other research initiatives. Wew would like to thank everyone who participated in the open house.

Earthquake Awareness Poster Contest for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade schools in West Tennessee was a success!
The contest was open to students in 4th, 5th and 6th grades in the following counties: Crockett, Dyer, Gibson, Fayette, Hardeman, Haywood, Lake, Lauderdale, Madison, Obion, Shelby, Tipton and Weakley. Participation by all public and private schools is encouraged. Students were to prepare posters that address earthquake preparedness in the home and the classroom. Prizes will be awarded to 1st, 2nd , and 3rd place in each division.

Public Service Announcements (PSA)
Five 10-second PSA’s based on input from the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency have been produced in partnership with WKNO TV in Memphis and narrated by Mayor Wharton, Mr. Chuck, and Governor Bredesen. These PSA’s will promote earthquake preparedness at the most basic levels. WKNO is a PBS affiliate serving most of the west Tennessee viewing area. Effort will also be given to broadcast the PSA through similar public TV markets in the EAW 2008 focus area that are outside of the WKNO market. PSA’s were broadcast over 600 times on all Mid-South area television stations beginning February 1, 2008.
