Preparing your home:

Preparing your home
  1. Install safety locks on cabinets and drawers.
  2. Check appliance cords annually.
  3. Strap your water heater to the wall.
  4. Store chemicals properly.
  5. Install safety film over your windows.
  6. Check the installation of ceiling fans and chandeliers. 
  7. Tighten screws annually.
  8. Do not hang anything glass over your bed.
  9. Secure bookshelves to the wall.
  10. Learn how to shut off your gas valve and keep a wrench near your gas meter.
  11. Keep a stocked and updated disaster kit that includes:  drinking water, non-perishable foods, a manual can opener, money, gloves, flashlights with extra bulbs (do not use candles), batteries, a radio, extra medications, and a first aid kit. Gas Meter
  12. Microchip or ID your pets; keep extra pet food and supplies (such as leashes, a carrier, a towel) with your disaster kit.
  13. Keep a disaster kit in your car that includes a first aid kit, extra clothes, walking shoes, food, and water.

Preparing your family and community:

  1. Have a disaster plan and rehearse it with your family members. 
  2. Decide on a safe meeting place for your family in the event you get separated.Supplies
  3. Work with neighbors to create a community disaster plan that includes a storage facility for supplies and a staging area.
  4. Encourage neighbors to get CERT training.

During an earthquake:

  1. Move away from windows and take shelter under a sturdy object or in a door frame.
  2. If you are driving, pull over and stay in your car.
